WIRELESS
- 2005
A few years back, wireless came into the picture as
the new way to connect! Today, the novice user goes to his/her favorite
computer parts store and purchases a wireless router and network card,
connects them up and WOW, their on the Internet.
But do you know, by simply
connecting these devices right out of the box without correctly
configuring them first, the user of a wireless device is wide open to
all types of misery to come.
Routers and Network cards
must be setup to keep the outside public from riding on your bandwidth
and even more serious, stealing information off your PC.
Here are 5 basic / minimum
rules when setting up any wireless network.
- Change the default
login password.
- Change the default SSID (Service Set Identifier - The name of your wireless
network)
- Disable SSID from
broadcasting over the airwaves.
- Enable and Setup WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy - Encrypts data as it is
transmitted from point to point.)
- Enable Mac Address
filtering (Media Access Control - Allows only
pre-defined addresses to connect to the device)
